The first specimen was lot 22887 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $564. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 400 Reis (Cruzado), ND, João IV (1640-56). NGC EF-45. Porto. Nice round flan with medium gray tone." João IV was the first Portuguese king after the Spanish were expelled in 1640. Hammered coins were produced at Porto, Lisbon and Evora, with Lisbon being the most available. Davenport lists these coins in his catalogs of European crowns for lack of anything larger; the coins are too small to be true crowns. Milled coinage was introduced in the 1680's.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-4381; cf.KM-53; cf.Gomes-J4.100.
