Portugal 1666 400 reis
This specimen was lot 22888 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $329. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 400 Reis (Cruzado), 1666. Alfonso VI (1656-83). NGC EF Details--Rim Filing. Nicely struck with attractive toning." Alfonso VI was the second Portuguese king after the Spanish were expelled in 1640. Hammered coins were produced at Porto, Lisbon and Évora, with Lisbon being the most available. Davenport lists these coins in his catalogs of European crowns for lack of anything larger; the coins are much too small to be true crowns. Milled coinage was introduced in the 1680's.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 22.94 g, 0.917 fine silver, 40 mm diameter.
