This specimen was lot 6434 in CNG Triton XXVIII (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $520.62. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL, Kingdom. Afonso VI o Vitorioso (the Victorious). 1656-1683. AR Cruzado – 400 Réis. Lisboa (Lisbon) mint. Dated 1665. Crowned coat-of-arms / Jerusalem cross. Toned, usual crude strike, a few scratches, edge split. VF. From the Drewry Family Collection. Ex Kagan’s (25 August 1977), lot 3250." Alfonso VI was the second Portuguese king after the Spanish were expelled in 1640. Hammered coins were produced at Porto, Lisbon and Évora, with Lisbon being the most available. This type is known for 1663-66. Davenport lists these coins in his catalogs of European crowns for lack of anything larger; the coins are much too small to be true crowns. Milled coinage was introduced in the 1680's.
