This specimen was lot 24731 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $2,232.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "George V 1930 Halfcrown, NGC MS63. Well struck an brilliant white with full mint frost. Very scarce in this exceptional condition. From The Ted Reams Collection." The 2½ shillings or half crown was struck in South Africa 1923-60. It was .800 fine silver until 1951 and .500 fine thereafter. The first years of issue (KM 19.1) varies from this type by having "2½ SHILLINGS 2½" in the reverse legend. In 1931, the reverse was modified to read "SUID AFRIKA" instead of "ZUID AFRIKA" and struck in this form until 1936.
Recorded mintage: 324,000 plus 14 proofs.
Specification: 14.14 g, .800 fine silver.
