South Africa 1930 florin
This specimen was lot 23029 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $282. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. Florin (2 Shillings), 1930. NGC AU-58. Only 13 coins seen at NGC in any Mint State grade (with none higher than MS-64). That being the case, nice looking examples in the higher Almost Uncirculated grades become the obvious alternative, especially when showing the flash and luster of the piece shown here." The South African florins of George V run 1923-36 with this subtype issued 1923-30. It is cheaper than the issues of 1925-29 but costlier than the issues of 1932-36. In 1931, the "FLORIN" on the reverse was changed to "2 SHILLINGS" (KM 22).
Recorded mintage: 267,000 plus 14 proofs.
Specification: 11.31 g, 0.800 fine silver, 28.5 mm diameter.
