This specimen was lot 72722 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $528. The catalog description[1] noted, "YEMEN. 5 Riyals, 1969. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. Struck to commemorate Qadhi Mohammed Mahmud Azzubairi Memorial. A nearly perfect example of this elusive issue that seldom appears on the market." The photo in the SCWC is another coin entirely, dated 1981. Many of these obscure NCLT commemoratives were ignored until recently and many sold at bullion or below.
Recorded mintage: unknown but all proofs.
Specification: 4.90 g, 0.900 fine gold, 0.1418 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: Fr-16; KM Y-6.
