Stack's Bowers 2025 ANA sale, lot 43388
SB825-43388r.jpg

This specimen was lot 43388 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. 2 Francs, 1809-H. La Rochelle Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS VF-30. Standing as the only example of the type in the PCGS census, this evenly circulated specimen features a deep gunmetal gray tone and a slightly mottled nature upon the reverse. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from CGB in 2009 for $2,723). Ex: CGB 40 (9/2009) Lot # 462." This type was struck 1809-14 during the reign of Napoleon I from numerous mints. Many issues of this type are known from a handful (<10) of examples. There are two known per Le Franc, probably including this one.

Recorded mintage: 4,516.

Specification: 10 g, 0.900 fine silver, 27 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier (1763-1819).

Catalog reference: KM-693.6; Gad-501; F.255/3.
