This specimen was lot 1056 in Sincona sale 63 (Zurich, June 2020), where it sold for 2,400 CHF (about US$3,007 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, <blockquote>"''Grossbritannien, konigreich, Charles I. 1625-1649. 1/2 Pound 1642, Oxford Mint. Selten. Sehr schön. Hübsche Patina.'' (kingdom of [[Great Britain]], Charles I, 1625-49, half pound of 1642, Oxford mint. Rare, Very fine, Attractively toned.)"</blockquote> While Charles had issued crowns in silver and gold prior to the Civil War, his urgent need for cash led him to open several provisional mints and issue crowns in a large variety of types. The half pound was worth ten shillings or two crowns and this was the only period when it was issued in silver.

Sincona sale 63, lot 1056

This specimen was lot 1056 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 2,400 CHF (about US$3,007 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Grossbritannien, konigreich, Charles I. 1625-1649. 1/2 Pound 1642, Oxford Mint. Selten. Sehr schön. Hübsche Patina. (kingdom of Great Britain, Charles I, 1625-49, half pound of 1642, Oxford mint. Rare, Very fine, Attractively toned.)"

While Charles had issued crowns in silver and gold prior to the Civil War, his urgent need for cash led him to open several provisional mints and issue crowns in a large variety of types. The half pound was worth ten shillings or two crowns and this was the only period when it was issued in silver.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 60.20 g, 0.925 fine silver, this specimen 60.37 g.

Catalog reference: KM 235.6 or KM 235.7, Seaby 2945. North 2404. Dav-3769.
