Iran AH 13(00) shahi

Sincona sale 67, lot 4159

This specimen was lot 4159 in Sincona sale 67 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 50 CHF (about US$66 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"IRAN | Qajar Dynasty | Nâsir al-dîn Shâh, 1264-1313 H./1848-1896 AD, Machine struck coinage, always with the mint name Tihrân, silver coins. Shahi sefid "13" only. Title and name in wreath, the mint at bottom, rev. lion and sun in wreath, the date below. Good very fine."

This type was struck AH 1297-1309 and undated. Many bungled or partial dates exist, including this one, which lacks the final two digits. One shahi was fifty dinars. With the coming of the milled coinage, all of the branch mints were closed and all production was completed in Tehran.
