Iran AH 1281 50 dinars KM-Pn3
This specimen was lot 1379 in Stephen Album sale 41 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2021), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRAN: Nasir al-Din Shah, 1848-1896, AE 50 dinars, Tehran, AH1281, bright original luster, cleaned, PCGS graded Unc details, RRR. This pattern was struck in the size actually used for the 100 dinars denomination when that type was adopted for use in AH1297. The 50 dinars circulating coin, half the size of this piece, was first issued in AH1293. Although the mint name appears as Tehran on this type, it was likely struck in Belgium." This specimen shows the transition to machine struck decimal coinage, which change was not accomplished for some years later. At that time, all the branch mints were closed in favor of the central mint at Tehran.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: bronze.
Catalog reference: KM-Pn3.
