from Steve Album sale 45, lot 1276
CNG Triton XXVIII, lot 932, the same coin?

The first specimen was lot 1276 in Stephen Album sale 45 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRAN: Nasir al-Din Shah, 1848-1896, AR 1000 dinars, Tehran, AH1281, pattern type, NGC graded MS61. Although the mint name appears as Tehran on this type, it was likely struck at a European mint, perhaps Brussels, Belgium." The second specimen was lot 932 in CNG Triton XXVIII (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $1,715. The catalog description[2] noted, "IRAN, Qajars. Nasir al-Din Shah. AH 1264-1313 / AD 1848-1896. AR 1000 Dinar Pattern. Tehran mint. Dated AH 1281 (1864). Persian lion and sun (Šir-o Xoršid); crown above, denomination below; all within laurel and oak wreath; AH date below wreath ties / al-sultan Nasir al-Din Shah Qajar in three lines within wreath; mint name below wreath ties. In NGC encapsulation 4861363-004, graded MS 61." This pattern was produced to promote the replacement of the old hammered coins with modern milled coinage. The regime, riven by feuds and perpetually bankrupt, did not implement milled coinage until AH 1294, when all the branch mints were closed. Pattern 500 dinars (KM Pn6 and Pn7) and 2000 dinars (KM Pn 10 and Pn11) also exist in silver and copper.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: 11.02 g, silver (KM Pn9) or copper (KM Pn8), the second specimen 23 mm diameter, 6 h axis.

Catalog reference: KM-Pn9.
