Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 33091
SB125-33091r.jpg

This specimen was lot 33091 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 1/2 Groat (2 Pence), ND (1638-42). Aberystwyth Mint; mm: Book. Charles I. PCGS AU-55. Obverse: Crowned half-length bust left; Reverse: Large plume with no inner circles. A RARE variety from this more elusive mint, and an impressive survivor at that, with only a touch of wear atop the devices. The surfaces are exceedingly attractive and wholesome, with no issues to speak of and some pleasing hints of color peeking through from beneath hearty gunmetal patina. From the Richard August Collection." This provisional mint in Wales also struck threepence, groats, sixpence, shillings and half crowns.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.01 g, 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: S-2900A; N-2343; Brooker 780 (same dies); Morrisson-A-1, KM 162.
