This specimen was lot 33875 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Confederation Specimen Franc 1939/8-B SP67 Ultra Cameo NGC, Bern mint. 1939/8 Overdate. Incredible frosty devices stand in stark contrast to the highly mirrored surfaces, which appear nearly jet black when viewed head on. Not surprisingly, this is currently the finest graded specimen example at NGC." This type was struck at the Bern mint 1874-1967. The design is still in use today tho the coin is now copper-nickel. This specimen is struck to the standard of the French franc of 1866-1920. Prior to confederation in 1850, each Swiss canton issued its own coins.
Recorded mintage: 2,106,000 plus specimens, a common date in all grades.
Specification: 5 g, .835 fine silver, 23.2 mm diameter, reeded edge.
