This specimen was lot 74309 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. British East India Company. 1/2 Rupee, 1835.-(B). Bombay Mint. William IV. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. The gorgeous Half-Rupee has a burnished violet finish to the surfaces that have toned over most evidence of the noted cleaning. Outside of the occasional hairlines, this piece displays very little evidence of actual handling. From the Hobart Collection." This type comes in numerous varieties, suggesting that it was struck with a frozen date until the introduction of the Victoria half rupee (KM 455) in 1840. The East India Company was dissolved and its assets taken over by the British government after the Mutiny of 1857.
Recorded mintage: 3,573,000 plus prooflikes plus 6,700,000 from Calcutta.
Specification: 5.83 g, 0.917 fine silver, 29.7 mm diameter.
