India 1835(c) 1/2 rupee
This specimen was lot 501 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $5,142.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA, Colonial. British India. William IV. 1830-1837. AR Half Rupee. East India Company issue. Calcutta mint. Dated 1835. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 65. Gem uncirculated with the faintest golden toning and a hint of cameo effect on the reverse. Purchased from Meridian Coin Company, November 1969." This type comes in numerous varieties, suggesting that it was struck with a frozen date until the introduction of the Victoria half rupee (KM 455) in 1840. The East India Company was dissolved and its assets taken over by the British government after the Mutiny of 1857.
