SB1122-72225r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72225 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 4 Reales, 1595-ToC. Toledo Mint. Philip II. PCGS EF-40. This slightly rough Cob from Segovia has large areas of flatness on the peripheries, although the mintmark and full date survive intact on the obverse. The reverse offers satisfying castles and lions with plenty of detail. An appealing example with plenty of originality. From the Pat Johnson Collection." Toledo was a prolific mint, striking coins by the hammer until the 1650's. Assayer C is listed for 1592-1613.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.73 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 13.64 g.
