This specimen is a better date of a series struck 1871-92 at the Culiacan mint. This 25 centavos piece replaced the two reales struck since colonial times. This is the final issue of this type from any mint; it was replaced by a smaller 20 centavos piece in 1898. An overdate, 1892/0, is recorded for the year. While some dates from Culiacan are common, others are extremely rare with less than half a dozen known to exist, making this series very challenging to complete. The third specimen was lot 9068 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $316.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Culiacan. 25 Centavos, 1892/0-CnM. Scarce date. Small 't' graffiti below eagle. Sharply struck. BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED."
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.903 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.
Recorded mintage: 16,000.
Catalog reference: KM 406.2.
