This specimen was lot 2562 in Goldberg sale 100 (Los Angeles, September 2017), where it sold for $517. The catalog description[1] noted, "[[Great Britain]]. Groat, ND. Charles I, 1625-1649. Aberystwyth mint (1638-42). Mint mark, book. Practically mint state with lovely green and blue old tone over glossy surfaces. Nicely struck and very round. Superb portrait. PCGS graded AU-55." This undated groat is among the more available denominations of Charles I, despite being a branch mint issue. Charles' conflicts with Parliament and his subsequent inability to raise funds cramped the production of coin. When milled coinage was introduced in the 1670's, much of the hammered coin was called in and melted.

Great Britain G100-2562rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 2562 in Goldberg sale 100 (Los Angeles, September 2017), where it sold for $517. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Milled coinage finally superseded the hammered coinage in 1664. However, the old hammered coin was not called in and melted until 1696-97.
