The specimen shown is a 1783-W double louis au buste habillé of the Lille mint. This specimen was lot 30487 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it sold for $5,581.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XVI gold 2 Louis d'Or 1783/2-W UNC Details (Surface Hairlines) NGC, Lille mint. A boldly struck, highly lustrous piece with typical flan flaws and evidence of light cleaning. A particularly nice overdate example that is very clear and currently unlisted in the SCWC. A choice, rare type, especially in this premium mint-state condition." The double louis of Louis XVI continued to be struck to the standard of 1726 but the price of gold had risen, making the type uneconomical to issue. In 1785, Calonne lowered the weight to 15.30 grams and recoined all the stocks in government hands, rendering this earlier French type very rare.
