Goldberg NY International sale 58, lot 1096
GNY23-1096r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1096 in Goldberg's NY International sale 58 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $5,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. Louis XVI (1774-1793). Gold Double Louis d' or au buste habille, 1781-W. Lille mint. Uniformed bust left. Rev. Crown over two oval shields of France and Navarre. Lovely golden rose peripheral toning on both sides. Pop 1; Only One Graded by PCGS. None at NGC. In PCGS holder graded MS 61." The double louis of Louis XVI continued to be struck to the standard of 1726 but the price of gold had risen, making the type uneconomical to issue. In 1785, finance minister Calonne lowered the weight to 15.30 grams and recoined all the stocks in government hands, rendering this earlier type very rare.

Recorded mintage: 8,100, a common date for the type[2].

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, 28-29 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by J.-C. Röettiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 875, Dr/2 № 601, Fr-470; Gad-362; KM 575.14.
