Russia 1838 5 kopeks rev Heritage 3024-25349.jpg

This specimen was lot 25349 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $1,351.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Nicholas I silver 5 Kopeks 1838 CПБ-HГ, Crowned double-headed Imperial eagle, with wings up / Crowned date and value in wreath, MS66 NGC. Ex: Falz-Fein Collection. A superb example of the type. The strike is bold and the surfaces free of detracting marks. Both sides display pleasing argent-gray toning with full luster beneath." This silver type was struck 1832-58 simultaneously with a copper coin of the same denomination (KM C140) issued from several branch mints. This specimen sold for ten times the catalog value.

Recorded mintage: 2,400,000.

Specification: 1.03 g, 0.868 fine silver, .028 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Bitkin 391, KM C163.
