North Peru 1838/7-L MB 1 real

The specimen shown is a 1 real struck at the Lima mint in 1838 for the short-lived state of North Peru. It is an overdate listed in the SCWC. The state of North Peru was a result of civil conflict, which saw the southern part of the country split away and unite briefly with Bolivia. The country was reunited in 1839. Two reales and eight reales were also issued for Estado Nor-Peruano. This type was legal tender in the United States until 1857 for 12½¢.

The coin shown was lot 24620 and sold on Apr 16, 2011 for $488.75 at the 2011 April Rosemont Signature World & Ancient Coins CICF Auction #3014 by Heritage Auctions. The catalog description reads: "North Peru 1 Real 1838/7 overdate, VF30 NGC, 1838/7, North Peru standing Liberty emission similar to the standard Lima issues of the Republic 1825-1857. Obtained at Boston ANA (1982) From The Dana Roberts Collection."
