Sedwick Treasure Auction 36, lot 1329

This specimen was lot 1329 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description^[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, ½ real, 1838 MB, NGC MS 63, 'top pop,' ex-O'Brien. Choice luster and very sharp, bold details with faint hint of rainbow toning, currently tied with just one other for finest in the NGC census. Pedigreed to the John O'Brien Collection (stated on label), with his tag." Altho the auctioneers did not state, this is an issue of North Peru, a shortlived division of Peru. The type is listed for 1836-38 with a modest catalog value but is seldom seen.
