This subtype of Peru eight reales was struck at the Cuzco mint in 1840 only and is the last eight reales therefrom. It is not rare but it is priced about 50% more than the common Cuzco issues of 1830-34. The complete span of Peru standing liberty eight reales runs 1825-55. The second specimen was lot 1521 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $977.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. Republic. 8 Reales, 18[40] CUZo A. Cuzco. Heavy-bodied standing Liberty holds oval shield inscribed LI/ BER/ TAD/ . Rv. Arms, large-letter legend. Single-date type, unusually lustrous and appealing. MS-63 (NGC). Ex Millennia Collection, Goldberg, May 2008, Lot 1191."
