Peru 1841-L MB 8 reales
The specimen shown is one of a series struck at the Lima mint 1840-41. A rare variety exists with LIBERTAD vertical (KM 142.10). At this point, the branch mints Cuzco and Arequipa were winding down their operations after being very busy in the 1820's and 30's. The last Cuzco eight reales was issued in 1840 (KM 142.9) and the last Arequipa eight reales was in 1841 (KM 142.11, an extreme rarity). The Pasco mint was open and made an irregular issue of four reales 1843-57 (KM 151.4 thru KM 151.10).
The first coin shown was lot 25207 in Heritage sale 3012 (New York, January 2011) where it sold for $1092.50. The catalog description noted: "Republic 8 Reales 1841-MB Lima, MS63 NGC, original patina with full mint brilliance, a very attractive example with a particularly lustrous obverse."
