This specimen is one of a series struck 1843-45 at the Pasco mint for Peru. A similar type was issued again in 1855-1857. The Pasco mint had a relatively short history. It was opened originally due to its proximity to a very productive silver mining area (Cerro de Pasco). However, the mint was unable to turn a profit, or even to stop the clandestine trade of silver bullion that left Cerro de Pasco on a regular basis for Bolivia[1]. There are several varieties for the year, some with the mint name PASCO written in monogram.
