Peru 1845-Pasco M 4 reales
The first specimen was lot 1337 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Pasco, 4 reales, 1845 M, very rare, ex-Flatt, ex-Sellschopp, ex-O'Brien. Same type as previous coin but next and final date of type with REPUBLICA and PASCO, also with diagnostic die-break at POR, lightly toned, the flan extending past the outer border on arms side, centers rather weak but overall no worse than AVF and probably finest known for this date, which was notably missing in Pat Johnson (KM says four known). Pedigreed to the H.P. Flatt Collection and the Sellschopp Collection (Swiss Bank Corp. auction of September 1988, lot 1235) and to the John O'Brien Collection, with his tag." The second specimen was lot 2019 in the same sale, where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Pasco, 4 reales, 1845 M, very rare, ex-O'Brien. Very rare type missing in the Pat Johnson Collection and noted by KM as "only four known." Holed Fine with full rims and legends but weak centers. Pedigreed to the John O'Brien Collection, with his tag." The Pasco mint is best known for some rare eight reales of 1836 (KM 142.6), some very rare two reales of 1843 and an intermittent issue of four reales 1843-57 (KM 151.4, 151.5, 151.6, 151.7, 151.9 and 151.10).
