Sed36-1351r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1351 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Pasco, 4 reales, 1857 AF, rare, NGC AU details / cleaned, ex-Flatt Plate, ex-Sellschopp, ex-O'Brien. Bold strike and rims except for weakness on face and above date, nicely toned around details but with clearly hairlined obverse fields, rare assayer for this final date, notably missing in the Pat Johnson collection. Plate Coin in Flatt, pedigreed to the Sellschopp Collection (Swiss Bank Corp. auction of September 1988, lot 1240) and to the John O'Brien Collection (both stated on label), with his tag." This specimen is one of a series struck 1843-45, 1855-57 at the Pasco mint. Pasco four reales, tho scarce, are not rare like the larger eight reales. They were legal tender in the United States until 1857 for 50¢. Three varieties are listed for 1857, assayer Z in O (most common of the three), assayer AF (shown here) and no assayer.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-151.10.
