Peru 1840-L MB 8 reales
This specimen was lot 6065 in Goldberg sale 72 (Los Angeles, February 2013), where it sold for $172.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Peru. 8 Reales, 1840-MB (Lima). Republic. Without Fineness. Standing liberty. PCGS graded MS-61. The Victor Jaramillo Collection." The specimen shown is one of a series struck at the Lima mint 1828-40. At this point, the branch mints Cuzco and Arequipa were winding down their operations after being very busy in the 1820's and 30's. The last Cuzco eight reales was issued in 1840 (KM 142.9) and the last Arequipa eight reales was in 1841 (KM 142.11, an extreme rarity). The Pasco mint was open and made an irregular issue of four reales 1843-57 (KM 151.4 thru KM 151.10).
