Stack's Bowers October 2024 Collectors Choice Online Auction, lot 72135

This specimen was lot 72135 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 8 Reales, 1740-P P. Potosi Mint. Philip V. PCGS EF-40. A boldly struck obverse with mintmark, assayer, and three digit date clear. The reverse shows the same bold strike and information. From the S.P. Rutherford Collection." This type was struck for Philip V through his entire reign. Assayer "M" stamped coins 1737-40 along with assayer "P" for 1740-43. The silver cobs were debased from 0.931 fine to 0.917 fine in 1728. The two assayers are priced the same for 1740.
