This specimen was lot 71218 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, 1740-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Diego de Pui (P). Philip V. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, EF Details. The noted environmental damage on this Cob refers to the verdigris corrosion on the reverse. This damage does not, however, diminish this coin's enticingly well-preserved detail which includes a prominent date on the obverse and assayer and mintmark on the reverse. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Ex: Paul Karon Collection (Ponterio 3/90) Lot # 426." This type was struck for Philip V through his entire reign. Assayer "M" stamped coins 1737-40 along with assayer "P" for 1740-43. The silver cobs were debased from 0.931 fine to 0.917 fine in 1728. The two assayers are priced the same for 1740.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 13.05 g.
