This specimen was lot 51382 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 1/4 Real, 1798-So. Santiago Mint. Charles IV. NGC VF-25. Charming quality with delicate gray surfaces that show only gentle forms of handling. Easily the finest we've observed of the date. From the EMO Collection." The Santiago mint experimented with several designs for the quarter real 1790-93 before settling on the familiar lion and castle type in 1796. It is one of a series minted 1792-1808 for Charles IV and 1810-17 for Ferdinand VII. A hoard of uncirculated 1817's has been dispersed but the other dates are tough to find.
Recorded mintage: 50,000.
Specification: 0.84 g, 0.896 fine silver.
