Chile 1799-So 1/4 real
This specimen was lot 51383 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 1/4 Real, 1799-So. Santiago Mint. Charles IV. NGC VF Details--Bent. Deeply toned with a few disguised marks in the fields and a slight wave to the planchet. A RARE and highly sought date among specialists. From the EMO Collection." The Santiago mint experimented with several designs for the quarter real 1790-93 before settling on the familiar lion and castle type in 1796. It is one of a series minted 1792-1808 for Charles IV and 1810-17 for Ferdinand VII. A hoard of uncirculated 1817's has been dispersed but the other dates are tough to find.
