Colonial quarter reales of the "Lions and castles" type are known from the Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and Popayán mints for 1796-1819 (KM 63--this type, KM 67). Cundinamarca quarter reales of debased silver are known for 1814-15 (KM F2) and 1820-22 (KM 79). Republican quarter reales (KM 85) are known for 1826-36. None are common, particularly in nice condition. This coin had a face value of 1/512 of an eight escudos. The second specimen shown was lot 1048 in Sedwick sale 11 (Winter Park, FL, April 2011), where it sold for $1,265. The catalog description[2] noted,

"Bogotá, Colombia, 1/4 real, Charles IV, 1798. Bold UNC, partially rainbow-toned, struck slightly off-center with resultantly crude rims, no problems. Pedigreed to the Cayón auction of February 2009 (lot 8143). Jorge Ortiz Murias collection of Colombian colonial minors."

Specification: .84 g, 0.896 fine silver, .024 troy oz ASW, this specimen 0.7 gram.
