This specimen was lot 20436 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $3,525. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Angel, ND (1544-47), Third Coinage. Lis Mint Mark. Henry VIII (1509-47). PCGS AU-58 Secure Holder. Angel with both feet on dragon. Obverse legends with double saltire stops and large crook shaped abbreviation marks. Crossed crosslet spear shaft. Excellent strike showing the fine details and facial features with lovely light orange tone around the devices. Excellent eye appeal." Lobel[2] notes that the sovereign was raised from twenty to twenty-two shillings in 1526. In 1544, the value was reduced to twenty shillings and the weight reduced from 240 grains to 200 grains. The angel, shown here, was one-third of a sovereign or six shillings eight pence.
