This specimen was lot 885 in Jean Elsen sale 122 (Brussels, September 2014), where it sold for €140 (about US$214 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AR cinquième d'écu au bandeau, 1741 X, Amiens. Droit: Tête à gauche, ceinte d'un bandeau. Revers: Ecu de France couronné, entre deux rameaux d'olivier. Traces d'ajustage. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XV (1715-74), silver fifth écu of the ribbon of 1741, Amiens mint.)"
This coin, called a cinquième d'écu au bandeau, was the French equivalent of a twenty cent piece. In the coinage system of the ancien régime, the 1/5 écu = 24 sols. The type was struck 1741-72 and is recorded for the Amiens mint ("X") for 1741 only. The Amiens mint closed in 1770.
