CNG Lissner sale, lot 290

This specimen was lot 290 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $726. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE, Royal. Louis XV le Bien-Aimé (the Well-Beloved). 1715–1774. AR Cinquième d’écu au bandeau. Rouen mint; différents: root/spade. Pierre Racine de Bocherville, engraver. Alexandre le Peinturier de Guillerville, director. Dated 1741 B. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 63. Choice strike with very lustrous charcoal gray patina. This is a very choice coin with tremendous eye appeal. The highest ever graded for date and type. Purchased from World-Wide Coins of California, November 1982." This coin, called a cinquième d'écu au bandeau, was the French equivalent of a twenty cent piece. In the coinage system of the ancien régime, the cinquième d'écu = 24 sols. The type was struck 1741-74 and is recorded for the Rouen mint ("B") for 1741-42 only.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a scarce date.

Specification: 5.89 g, 0.917 fine silver, 26 mm diameter, designed by J.-C. Röettiers. This specimen 26 mm diameter, 5.86 g, 6h axis.
