This specimen was lot 1731 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €600 (about US$775 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"KÖNIGREICH Napoléon I, 1804-1814, 1815. 5 Francs 1806, L, Bayonne. Vorzüglich. (empire of France, Napoleon I, 1804-14, five francs of 1806, Bayonne mint, extremely fine.)"
Shown is a Napoleonic five francs struck at the Bayonne mint (mint mark "L") in 1806. It is a better date but not rare. The Bayonne mint struck French coins until 1834. The various designs of Napoleonic five francs form eight distinct types of which this is the fifth, struck 1806-07 with a complete set of this type comprising 23 date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. The type is not difficult to find but is expensive in high grade. All silver five francs were officially recalled in 1928 but ceased to circulate after World War I. This coin was legal tender in the United States until 1857 at a value of 93 cents.
Recorded mintage: 550,878.
