This specimen was lot 40394 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $5,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 1/2 Crown, ND (1644) CHST. Chester Mint; mm: Three Gerbs. Charles I. PCGS AU-50. Obverse: Charles I on horseback riding left, CHST below, plume behind; Reverse: Garnished oval coat of arms. An EXTREMELY RARE mint for Charles I coinage, struck under Lord Byron as an emergency issue during the English Civil War. Interestingly, this type was struck using a roller press, resulting in a curved shape. The planchet cutting process, however, was evidently not ideal, as most examples exhibit jagged edges and a dramatic oval shape. The present piece, while sporting mild circulation, is arguably among the finer examples obtainable, with ample luster remaining through the fields, attractive original surfaces, and solid detail to the horse and rider. From the Lucius S. Ruder Collection." Chester, the capital of Cheshire, was held by the royalists from September 1642 until it was besieged in September 1645. The city held out long enough for the king to escape and then surrendered.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 15.05 g, 0.925 fine silver.
