This specimen was lot 20091 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. 100 Yuan, 1988. Lunar Series, Year of the Dragon. NGC PROOF-69. Sharply struck with hard mirror fields and frosted cameo devices. Brilliant and attractive." This NCLT initiated the series honoring the Chinese zodiac. Subsequent issues followed this standard until 1993, when the 100 yuan was reduced to ½ ounce then restored to one ounce in 1994, where it remains. This type was accompanied by KM 199 (500 yuan, 5 oz), KM 200 (1000 yuan, 12 oz) and KM 197 (100 yuan, 1 oz platinum), all featuring the Year of the Dragon.
Recorded mintage: 10,000.
Specification: 31.13 g, 0.999 fine gold, 1 troy oz AGW.
