Sincona sale 77, lot 2095

This specimen was lot 2095 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 8,000 CHF (about US$9,711 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"CHINA | Volksrepublik. 500 Yuan 1988. 5 Unzen Feingold. Polierte Platte. Im Originaletui mit Zertifikat. (people's republic of China, five hundred yuan of 1988, five ounces of gold. Choice Proof, In original box with certificate.)"

The one ounce gold panda was introduced in 1983 and the five ounce version premiered in 1987. This example is the second in the series. More were issued 1992-94.

Recorded mintage: 3,000 proofs.

Specification: 155.5 g, 0.999 fine gold, 5 troy oz AGW.
