China 1988 yuan KM-182

Stack's Bowers April 2021 Hong Kong sale, lot 54142

This specimen was lot 54142 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Yuan, 1988. BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. A SCARCE issue, struck to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the People's Bank. Sharply struck with soft satin luster and lightly toned. Installed in the Bank of China's original holder, with original box, display case, and certificate of authenticity." The regular issue yuan featuring the Great Wall (KM 18) ended in 1986 but several commemoratives were issued in 1988, including KM 180 and KM 181. This one is the scarcest and this example realized eight times the catalog value.
