This specimen was lot 1089 in Sincona sale 22 (Zurich, May 2015), where it sold for 375 CHF (about US$568 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, <blockquote>"''Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, Herzogtum, Julius, 1568-1589 Taler 1588. Goslar Brillentaler. Gutes sehr schön.'' (Duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Julius (1568-89), thaler of 1588, Goslar mint, good very fine.)"</blockquote> This type was issued 1588-89 and is fairly common for the period. The "brillenthaler" nickname comes from what appears to be spectacles (''brillen'') below the skull in the wild man's hand.

Sincona sale 22, lot 1089

This specimen was lot 1089 in Sincona sale 22 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 375 CHF (about US$568 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, Herzogtum, Julius, 1568-1589 Taler 1588. Goslar Brillentaler. Gutes sehr schön. (Germany, Duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Julius (1568-89), thaler of 1588, Goslar mint, good very fine.)"

This type was issued 1588-89 and is fairly common for the period. The "brillenthaler" nickname comes from what appears to be spectacles (brillen) below the skull in the wild man's hand. Several other thalers (Dav-9065 and -9066) have this nickname.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 29.05 g.

Catalog reference: KM MB220, Welter 581; Dav-9067.
