Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 8231
SB122-8231r.jpg

This specimen was lot 8231 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 8 Reales, 1605. Toledo Mint. Philip III. NGC AU-55. NGC notes this attractive and lustrous 8 Reales Cob as a 1605 dated example, but does not mention a mint. Krause and Calico list only a single mint for 1605, making the current example most likely from the Toledo mint. Boldly struck and with ample mint luster, this is a great example of the ever-popular type." This cob was issued from Toledo 1605 only and is a rare date. Similar cobs were produced at Madrid, Valladolid, Seville and Segovia. Segovia also issued milled 8 reales.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 27.46 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 27.36 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-4862, KM-38.2; cf. Cal-type 172 #985, Dav-4397.
