Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 1529

This specimen was lot 1529 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,121 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ESPAGNE, Philippe III (1598-1621), AR 8 reales, 1607, Ségovie. Frappé au balancier. D/ Ecu couronné. A g., aqueduc et C. R/ Armes écartelées de Castille et Leon dans un polylobe. Rare. Fin de plaque. La première date de la frappe mécanique. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of Spain, Philip III, 1598-1621, silver eight reales of 1607, Segovia mint, struck on the balance press. Obverse: crowned arms, aqueduct mintmark to left; reverse: quartered arms of Castile and Leon in a polylobe. Rare, a little thin on one side, the first date of mechanical striking. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This type was milled 1607-10. Cob eight reales (KM 18) were also struck in Segovia at this time, probably in a different workshop.

Reported Mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 28.10 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen 27,71 g.
