Sincona sale 91, lot 3098

This specimen was lot 3098 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 80 CHF (about US$106 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Bistum Basel, Johann Konrad II. von Reinach-Hirzbach, 1705-1737. Halbbatzen 1719, Pruntrut. Sehr schön. Randfehler. (Switzerland, bishopric of Basel, John Conrad II of Reinach-Hirzbach, 1705-1737, half batzen of 1719, Pruntrut mint. Very fine, Edge flaws.)"

The bishop of Basel was driven from his seat when Basel turned Protestant during the Reformation. He resided in Pruntrut and issued coins from there. This type was struck 1717-19 and 1733. It is listed in the SCWC as a two kreuzer, not a half batzen, but the two denominations had the same value.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.59 g, billon, 23 mm diameter, this specimen 1.66 g.

Catalog reference: KM 41, D.T. 708c, HMZ 2-149d.
