Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 75319
SB1122-75319r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75319 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Venice. Silver Bezzo, ND (1779-89). Paolo Renier. NGC MS-63. Also known as 6 Denari. The Doge is kneeling before St. Mark on the obverse. Christ standing, offering up a benediction on the reverse. Ex. Newman Collection." This billon coin had a face value of six bagattini. It is the only issue of this denomination for this ruler. While Venice is numismatically famous for her series of gold ducats, there is a long series of minor coinage which is frequently ignored. Small change for Paolo Renier include a soldo (KM 697), a ten soldi (KM 693), a fifteen soldi (KM 694), an eighth tallero (KM 727) and an eighth scudo (KM 699). Twenty soldi made a lira.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.02 g, .031 fine silver, 18 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-696, Cr-84.
