This specimen was lot 43148 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $630. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. Real, 1793-LM IJ. Lima Mint. Charles IV. NGC MS-61." This specimen is one of a series struck 1791-1808 at Lima during the reign of Charles IV (1788-1808). The years 1791-93 saw the use of a local bust slightly larger than the standard bust of later years. As a class, colonial coinage of Peru is much less plentiful than that of Mexico, tho it is more available than the remaining mints. However, Harris[2] noted the abundance of Charles IV one reales as follows: Mexico City, Potosi, Santiago (all common), Lima, Guatemala (somewhat scarce), Bogotá (rare).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.38 g, 0.903 fine silver.
