Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70777

This specimen was lot 70777 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. 1/12 Taler (2 Groschen), 1790-IC. Dresden Mint. Friedrich August III. NGC MS-64. This wholly original looking near Gem minor exhibits a bold strike, lustrous surfaces and cartwheel luster displaying light attractive mottled patina." On the death of emperor Joseph II, the elector became vicar of the empire until such time as a new emperor could be elected. This one-twelfth thaler was issued to commemorate the occasion. The elector also minted a thaler (KM 1023), a gulden (KM 1022) and a half gulden (KM 1021).

Recorded mintage: unknown but not rare.

Specification: 2.33 g, 0.833 fine silver.
