Stack's Bowers 2019 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71312
Denmark SB1019-71312r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71312 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. Krone (4 Mark), 1655. Frederik III. PCGS AU-50 Gold Shield. Variety with no mintmasters mark or stop after date. List in the SCWC as RARE with no value information. Interesting to note is the variety without mintmasters mark is not listed in any of the above Scandinavian reference material. A well struck and well preserved example of the type with bold design features and light attractive grey tone." This type is listed for 1655-58 in numerous varieties. Danish crowns of the seventeenth century range from the scarce to the obscenely rare. Either they were melted extensively or the poverty of the king prevented large issues or both. This type is not the most expensive but still runs five times the price of a contemporary thaler from Brunswick or Saxony.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 22.27 g, .671 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-3572; KM-194.2a; Sieg-49.1; H-95A; Schou-24.
